The innovative LitterLotto League competition in schools was launched last year to encourage pupils to bin their waste, as part of a wider partnership with Keep Scotland Beautiful and LitterLotto.

Ayr Academy scooped the top prize of £500 after fierce competition with our other seven secondary schools.

The school plan to spend their winnings on a trip to Dynamic Earth (Edinburgh's Science Centre and Planetarium) to complete a climate change workshop; and a range of prizes and materials for an upcoming 'bird box competition' for S1s to help improve biodiversity in the school.

LitterLotto is already available to anyone in South Ayrshire following its launch in March 2023. It is a free to enter prize draw that aims to help reduce litter through behavioural change, incentivising people to bin their litter responsibly.

To be in with a chance of winning, all you need to do is download the free LitterLotto app on your smartphone or device, and when you're out and about use the app to take a picture of you placing your litter in the bin. Each time you submit a new photo, you'll have another opportunity to win a prize.

Councillor Martin Kilbride, South Ayrshire Council's Portfolio Holder for Buildings, Housing and Environment said:

"Congratulations to Ayr Academy on their win, this is great news and demonstrates how initiatives such as LitterLotto can really help to drive behaviour change.

"I hope this encourages more people in South Ayrshire to engage with the LitterLotto app, and helps us contribute to building a cleaner, greener future for everyone."

David Landsberg, founder and CEO of LitterLotto, said:

"We're proud to partner with South Ayrshire Council to inspire cleaner public spaces and educate students through the innovative Litterotto Leagues.

"Working together really is making a difference - it's fantastic to see that students across the schools have really adopted a passion and understanding for binning litter responsibly."
