South Scotland Regional MSP Sharon Dowey has visited Pine Trees Nursery in Prestwick.
The MSP lodged a motion in the Scottish Parliament, congratulating the nursery for achieving a UNICEF Silver Rights Respecting Schools Award.
Being accredited with this award means that the nursery has a rights respecting ethos and is empowering children and young people, as well as developing their understanding of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. The Silver accreditation recognises that the learning and teaching of rights is becoming established within the nursery, and that children's rights are learned, understood and lived within this environment.
The MSP was given a tour of the nursery by practitioner Samantha McClure, Rights Co-ordinator, and met with owner Fiona Caldow and nursery manager Diane McCarrell.
Samantha explained how it is of vital importance that children are made aware of their rights, and how this is embedded into their learning.
Scottish Conservative and Unionist MSP Sharon Dowey said:
“It was a real pleasure to visit Pine Trees Nursery in Prestwick and present them with a parliamentary motion, congratulating them on attaining their Silver Rights Respecting School Award.
I thoroughly enjoyed visiting the team at Pine Trees and learning more about how rights and responsibilities are embedded into the ethos of the nursery and the learning the young people receive.”
Nursery owner Fiona Caldow said:
“I would like to thank Sharon for taking the time out of her busy schedule to visit us and thank the team for all of their hard work and efforts.”
