With the bathing season just round the corner, SEPA has released its annual report on bathing water quality across Scotland.
There are seven designated bathing waters in South Ayrshire monitored by SEPA and the report reveals that Prestwick remains ‘good’ while Culzean, Girvan, Maidens and Troon (South Beach) have been classed as ‘sufficient’.
Ayr (South Beach) and Heads of Ayr were both rated as ‘poor’. Electronic signage is already in place at these two locations, which advise against bathing when the real-time water quality is assessed as ‘poor’.
The SEPA classifications reflect the water quality alone and Ayr South, Troon, Maidens and Prestwick have once again all been awarded Beach Awards for cleanliness.
Councillor Ian Cochrane, Environment Portfolio Holder for South Ayrshire Council said: “Thousands of people use our beaches and with good weather predicted, I’m sure we are in for another busy season.

“We have been working with various partners to improve the water quality at Ayr (South Beach) and another public awareness campaign is set to run this summer. Indications are that this work is paying off and it is hoped the classification for Ayr South Beach will improve.
“We will continue to work with SEPA, Scottish Water and landowners to improve the quality of our bathing water and meet these strict bathing standards. I would urge anyone visiting our coastline to respect the environment and help keep our beaches looking their best.”
