South Ayrshire Council is delighted to collaborate with multi-award-winning, leisure industry experts, Alliance Leisure, on the centre's transformation project.

Ahead of this, SAC are inviting people to come along to a public engagement event at the Citadel, between 2.00pm - 7.00pm on Wednesday 21 August, to find out more about our plans for the facility.

During the event, we'll showcase proposals for the overhaul, which will see a major programme of internal and external improvement works take place over the next 18 months.  We'll also share information on some other Council projects that are planned in close proximity to the Citadel, including the Esplanade and the inner harbour area.

To make it easier for everyone to keep up to date with progress on the refurbishment, we've also launched a dedicated microsite here.  This is the go-to hub for information and updates about the Citadel works.

On the microsite you'll be able to find out what is underway and view plans and images of what you can expect to see when the works are complete. You'll also find a list of helpful FAQs about the project and the temporary impact it may have on some of the services we deliver at the Citadel.

South Ayrshire Council's Portfolio Holder for Tourism, Culture and Rural Affairs, Councillor Alec Clark, said:

"The Citadel is an extremely popular facility, with around 300,000 people coming through its doors each year. So, it's fantastic to know that the upgrade works will get underway soon.  The launch of our new dedicated microsite will allow people to keep up to date as the work progresses."

South Ayrshire Council's Portfolio Holder for Sport and Leisure, Councillor Brian Connolly, said:

"Our extensive refurbishment programme will modernise the Citadel to ensure we can meet the needs of today's customers and service users. We've created the microsite to make it easy for everyone to follow the programme of works and see the renovation take shape as progress is made."

South Ayrshire Council's Portfolio Holder for Buildings, Housing and Environment, Councillor Martin Kilbride, said:

"I'm pleased that we're in a position to begin the work on the Citadel later this year.  Our public engagement session will be a great opportunity for locals and visitors to find out more details about the plans for the building, so I'd encourage people to come along and join us at the event on the 21st of August."

The full programme of renovation works at the Citadel is due to be complete in late 2026.

The public engagement event will be held at the Citadel Leisure Centre, Ayr on Wednesday 21 August between 2.00pm - 7.00pm.
