Senior Council officials and local elected members have joined forces in a bid to preserve a vital lifeline for the local Stewarton community.

Last month it was announced that Stewarton’s Post Office would close as part of a series of planned store closures by ‘Morrisons Daily’ Stores, which is also home to the local Post Office. The Post Office facility is expected to close this weekend, with the store closing on Wednesday 16 April.
The Post Office has confirmed its commitment to restoring services in Stewarton if a new retail partner can be found. Officers from the Council’s Economic Growth team have been working alongside Ward 1 Councillors to explore ways in which the Council could work with the local community and businesses to address the withdrawal of the post office service in Stewarton.
In a joint statement, Councillors Stephen Canning, John McGhee, Ellen Freel and John
MacFadzean said:

“The Post Office provides a vital lifeline for our rural communities and for many people this is the only access they have to local banking facilities for miles round. Not everyone is digitally minded, particularly for some of the older members and more vulnerable members of our community, so we are keen to see this service restored with the minimum of delay.
“In recent days we have met with representatives from the community and local businesses and Senior Council Officers to look for any window of opportunity. We are please to say that these discussions have been constructive, and we hope to reach a more positive way forward.”
In the meantime, local residents are being encouraged, where possible and practicable, to use Post office facilities in Kilmaurs or Dunlop.
