Led by Crosshouse Children’s Fund, this major initiative aims to create a more comforting and child-friendly environment for young patients and their families.
Thanks to an initial investment of £30,000 from the charity, the transformation of the entrance hall and lift area to the children’s ward is now complete. Previously, this space looked no different from an adult inpatient ward, offering little indication that it was a place designed for children. Now, the area is vibrant, cheerful, and welcoming, helping to ease children’s anxiety as they begin their hospital journey.
Caroline Blake, Head of Nursing for Women & Children’s Services, said:
“Families and children frequently tell us how much they love the new entrance. It has already had a hugely positive impact, helping to create a calmer, less stressful experience for children and their families. As further work takes place within the clinical areas, we know this will continue to support children’s recovery by providing a more colourful and comforting environment. We are truly grateful to Crosshouse Children’s Fund and the Ayrshire community for making this possible.”

With thousands of children receiving care at University Crosshouse Hospital each year, the Colour for Crosshouse appeal aims to raise further funds to continue transforming the children’s wards and A&E. The project is designed to ensure hospital spaces are not only functional but also fun, relaxing, and engaging for young patients. Children, families, and hospital staff are playing an active role in shaping the designs, ensuring that the results reflect their needs and preferences.
The co-design approach was led by Staunch Industries, a creative consultancy with extensive experience of designing for healthcare environments across Scotland. The inclusive and collaborative approach centred around a design workshop carried out in the hospital, ensuring that the project reflected the contributions of the children at its heart.
Kirsten Watson, CEO of Crosshouse Children’s Fund, added:
“The hospital environment plays a crucial role in a child’s recovery, and we want to ensure that every child in hospital in Ayrshire receives care in a space that is as warm and welcoming as the incredible staff who look after them. We hope the Ayrshire community will continue to back this appeal by donating or fundraising to help us reach the next milestone in transforming the children’s wards.”
