SNP MSP Siobhian Brown is welcoming the latest developments in the ongoing flood reduction project in Prestwick.

The project aims to alleviate the risk of flooding and improve water management in the community and involves collaboration between Scottish Water and residents. It is set to make a significant impact on flood resilience in the area.

The project has made significant progress, with 30 water butts successfully installed at homes across the neighbourhood, with the remaining 6 expected to be completed before Christmas.

These installations come after the successful placement of planters at St. Ninian's Episcopal Church earlier this year, part of an ongoing effort to reduce rainwater run-off and prevent unnecessary strain on the local sewer network during heavy rainfall.

In the new year, the focus will shift to installing additional planters. The water butts and planters will serve to capture rainwater run-off from property roofs, helping to mitigate flooding and prevent water from entering the sewer system.

Commenting on the project Ayr, Prestwick and Troon MSP Siobhian Brown said:

“We are all aware of flooding issues and the increase in the recent decade of heavy rain due to climate change. This project over the past few years has been ongoing and to look at ways to improve flooding. Simple things like installation of water butts in gardens and also a reduction in driveways being tarmacked can all help with flooding.

It’s great to see the successful installation of the water butts in Prestwick, and I am looking forward to the continued positive impact of this project. The planters and water butts will help reduce flooding in the area, and their long-term monitoring and maintenance by Scottish Water will ensure their continued effectiveness. I am pleased to support this important initiative which will benefit our community for years to come.”

The flood reduction project will be monitored and maintained by Scottish Water for two years, ensuring that the installations continue to perform as expected and provide long-term benefits for the residents of Prestwick.
