Plans to merge Glenburn and St Ninians primary schools revealed

South Ayrshire Council has issued letters advising parents and carers of pupils and children at Glenburn Primary and Early Years Centre and St Ninian's Primary and Early Years Centre in Prestwick of a proposed consultation to create a shared educational campus.

The proposed consultation – which will only progress if approved by Councillors next month – will set out the potential to transform education in the town by building two brand-new schools and a new early years centre, all of which would share the same campus on a site yet to be identified. Although on a shared campus with some shared facilities, each school would retain its own distinctive ethos and identity.

The aim of the proposed campus is to provide pupils, parents/carers, staff and the local community with first-class facilities that would help transform learning and teaching, as well as enhance services available to local people. Each school would retain its own name, identity, staff and pupils, while the new early years centre would have its own dedicated centre manager.

Douglas Hutchison, Director of Educational Services, said: "This is only the very first step of what will be – if approved – a clear and open process that will give parents, carers, staff, pupils and local people the chance to be involved from the outset, and have their say.

"We have a very successful track record of working in partnership with our school communities through proposed changes and we would intend to do exactly the same this time if the proposed consultation gets the go-ahead for Glenburn and St Ninian's.

"Our new schools across South Ayrshire are making a real difference for our communities and this could be Prestwick's chance to be part of that exciting story."

The request to progress the proposed consultation will be considered by Councillors on Tuesday 13 February
