East Ayrshire’s Playday made a welcome return to Kilmarnock’s Kay Park last week, and was enjoyed by over 6000 children and families who took part in the celebration of play and fun.
The event was organised by the Council’s Vibrant Communities Play and Early Intervention Team to give children free access to a wide variety of play and engaging activities in various zones including adventure, creative, messy, fun, physical, and free play.
Fort building, obstacle courses, football skills, canoeing, crafts and everyone’s favourite, the mud slide, all provided fantastic entertainment for children and their families on the day and there was also the chance to connect with various services at information stalls involving the Council’s partners.
Playday supports all children’s right to play, highlights the importance of physical and emotional health and wellbeing, encourages respect and appreciation of the natural environment and promotes children’s potential development and learning. This year’s theme was ‘Play – the culture of childhood’, which celebrates the fact that playfulness is a distinct feature of behaviour across different generations and cultures.
Councillor Jim McMahon, Cabinet Member for Housing, Transport and Communities, said: “Playday is an event that families always look forward to each year. This year’s theme was all about supporting play, fun and friendships, and how playing is vital for children’s health, happiness, and creativity. It allows them to work together, build relationships, and develop a real sense of culture.
