South Scotland MSP Sharon Dowey praised the value of apprenticeships and practical trades during a visit to a Construction Skills Demonstration event at Prestwick Academy.

Facilitated by the school and the Ayrshire Construction Training Group, the event brought several local employers together with young people, showcasing different career opportunities in construction and practical trades.
Businesses such as Kerr Roofing & Building, McTaggart Construction and Go Wright Stonemasons offered hands-on demonstrations, which provided insights into potential future career paths.
During her visit, Dowey engaged with employers, pupils and staff, and discussed the important role that apprenticeships and practical trades play in the post-school landscape, and the wider economy.

Scottish Conservative and Unionist MSP Sharon Dowey said:
“It was a real pleasure to visit Prestwick Academy and see this event first-hand.
“I enjoyed watching the young people engage with the practical tasks and learn more about the career paths available to them.
“I’d like to thank the employers who gave up their time to engage with the young people and congratulate everyone involved in organising the event. Initiatives like this are vital in helping students make informed choices about their futures.”
