Garden centre digs deep to help Whiteleys Retreat

MONEY raised by a garden centre at one of their charity events is going to help fund short breaks in the countryside for children and young people with cancer and other life-altering illnesses.

Staff from Cardwell Garden Centre, near Gourock paid a visit to Whiteleys Retreat, near Alloway, in Ayrshire to see for themselves the fantastic work that goes on there to provide respite for families.

And they handed over £250 that was raised during a recent BBQ Garden Party held at Cardwell.

Whiteleys Retreat was opened only last year after a massive fundraising effort and the charity provides luxury accommodation in two cottages to families whose children are suffering serious illness.

The cottages are set in 32 acres of farmland and countryside with a playpark along with the resident Shetland ponies, alpacas and rabbits for the young people to enjoy.

Billy Herd, from Whiteleys Retreat said: “We’re very grateful to Cardwell for collecting money for our charity. We need to raise £100,000 a year to keep going and provide a much-needed service.”

Cardwell’s retail general manager, Paul Carmichael said:

“You can’t help but be impressed by what the charity has done in such a short space of time.

“Their cottages are very impressive and the surrounding land is ideal for families needing a bit of respite together.

“We regularly stage charity events at Cardwell during our fun weekends and we hope people will continue to come along to support us in raising money for many different good causes.”
