A new exhibition at the Dick Institute is offering visitors a fresh perspective on the work of one of Britain’s most celebrated artists.
After Freud showcases work by HNC Art and Design students from Ayrshire College, who were challenged to create their own artistic responses to the etchings of Lucian Freud.
The exhibition opened on 20 June and will remain on display until 3 October 2026.
Freud’s etchings were exhibited in the Dick Institute’s Main Gallery earlier this year, providing the inspiration for the students’ SQA Graded Unit project.
Working from an open brief, the emerging artists were encouraged to take a self-directed and independent approach, exploring their own personal themes, ideas and imagery.
The students also experimented with a wide range of artistic media and techniques, resulting in a varied collection of work that reflects both Freud’s influence and their own individual creative styles.
After Freud is the latest collaboration between Ayrshire College and Ayrshire360, helping students gain experience of exhibiting in a professional gallery environment while giving the wider community an opportunity to discover the next generation of Ayrshire artists.
The exhibition is free to visit and can be viewed during the Dick Institute’s normal opening hours.
