Ayrshire residents are being offered the chance to take to the airwaves and host their own radio programme, with UWS Radio inviting new community volunteers to get involved.

The station will hold an information and training day at the University of the West of Scotland’s Ayr campus on Wednesday 14 October, from 10am to 4pm.

The event will give prospective presenters an opportunity to meet the team, learn how the station operates and discuss ideas for their own shows.

No broadcasting experience, technical knowledge or connection to the University is required. Those attending do not need to have a fully developed programme idea.

The team is interested in hearing from people who want to share music, discuss a hobby or lifelong interest, or provide a platform for local people and organisations.

Chris Gilgallon, who is helping lead the day, said: “Lots of people have probably listened to the radio and thought they’d like to give it a go. This is an opportunity to find out what’s involved and talk to us about what you’d like to do.

“You don’t need broadcasting experience or technical knowledge to get started. Bring your enthusiasm, your interests and any questions you have. We can help you take the next step.”

Based at the Ayr campus, UWS Radio broadcasts 24 hours a day on DAB and online. Community volunteers have long been part of the station, with some presenters involved for more than a decade.

Station manager Gemma Trainor, a fourth-year UWS student, hopes the event will encourage more people from across Ayrshire to join.

She said: “One of the lovely things about radio is hearing someone share something they really care about. There are so many people across Ayrshire with interests, stories and ideas that could make a great show.

“We’d love to welcome some new voices to UWS Radio. If you’re curious but a bit nervous, come along and have a chat. You don’t have to turn up ready to go live!”

The day will include introductory discussions, workshops and training on presenting and developing a programme. Further training days may be arranged if demand is high.

Anyone interested is encouraged to email uwsradio@gmail.com to register their interest and find out more.
