Families and schools in North Ayrshire are being invited to collect free high-visibility vests for children as mornings and evenings become darker.

Miller Homes is offering the vests at its Manse Field development in Beith as part of its Home Safe initiative, which is marking seven years in the West of Scotland.
The initiative coincides with International Walk to School Month and aims to help children remain visible to other road users when walking, cycling or scooting.
Since launching Home Safe in 2019, the housebuilder says it has donated more than 9,000 high-visibility vests to children and families across the West of Scotland.

Transport Scotland figures cited by Miller Homes recorded 5,734 road casualties across Scotland in 2024, including 495 children aged under 16. Among those were 234 child pedestrian casualties, of whom 107 were seriously injured.
Andrew McArthur, Regional Operations Director for Miller Homes Scotland West, said: “Home Safe is an initiative we’re incredibly proud of, and it’s fantastic to be celebrating its seventh year.
“Since launching the initiative, we’ve donated more than 9,000 high-visibility vests to children and families across the West of Scotland, helping them stay visible in their local communities.”

He added: “As the mornings and evenings become darker, visibility becomes increasingly important for children walking, cycling or scooting to school and when they’re out and about locally.
“We hope our Home Safe vests will give parents and carers some additional reassurance while helping children be more visible to other road users.”
Families and schools can collect the free vests from the sales centre at Manse Field in Beith while stocks last.
The sales centre is open Thursday to Monday, from 10.30am to 5.30pm.
