Construction of the new Girvan Primary School and Early Years Centre has reached a milestone with the completion of the campus’s steel structure.

Pupils and school staff joined councillors, representatives from construction firm Kier and invited guests at the site on Tuesday, October 6, for a topping out ceremony marking progress on the project.

The new campus is being built on the existing school site, where construction began earlier this year.

It will include a primary school with classrooms across two levels and a dedicated Additional Support Needs base. A standalone Early Years Centre will have its own entrance and reception.

Pupils will move into the new building once it is complete, before demolition of the existing school begins. The phased approach is intended to minimise disruption to learning during the transition.

Councillor Alec Clark, South Ayrshire Council’s Depute Leader and Policy Lead for Commercial and Operational Services, said the milestone was significant for both the school and the wider community.

He said: “It’s fantastic to see the building taking shape, and we’re one step closer to delivering a modern, high-quality learning environment that will support children, families and the community for generations to come.”

Councillor William Grant, the council’s Policy Lead for Education and Lifelong Learning, said the project would provide facilities supporting children throughout their early education.

He said: “The new school and early years centre will provide first-class facilities that support learning, wellbeing and achievement from the early stages, helping our young people to reach their full potential.”

Councillor Martin Kilbride, Policy Lead for Housing and Property Services, said the campus had been designed to provide sustainable facilities meeting the needs of pupils, staff and the wider community.

Philip McDowell, Regional Director for Kier Construction North & Scotland, described completion of the steel structure as a significant achievement.

He said: “Reaching this topping out milestone is a significant achievement and a testament to the strong partnership between Kier and South Ayrshire Council.”

He added: “We look forward to progressing the next phase of work on-site and delivering this important new facility.”
