The international award recognises those whose courage, compassion and commitment have helped improve the lives of others.

Established in honour of Scotland’s national poet, the award celebrates outstanding contributions to humanitarian causes, human rights, social justice and positive change.

The Robert Burns Humanitarian Award is supported by South Ayrshire Council’s Destination South Ayrshire service.

Nominations can be submitted for individuals or groups from anywhere in the world. Those nominated do not have to be prominent or widely known, with the award also providing an opportunity to celebrate unsung humanitarians carrying out important work within their communities.

The recipient will receive the equivalent of 1,759 guineas, approximately £1,800. The amount represents the year of Robert Burns’ birth and the currency used during his lifetime.

The 2026 award was presented to humanitarian public health specialist Osas Aizeyosabor Agho in recognition of work that has delivered vital support across Africa and Europe.

Councillor Brian Connolly, Chair of the RBHA judging panel and Leader of South Ayrshire Council, said: “The Robert Burns Humanitarian Award shines a light on people whose courage and compassion bring hope to others, often in the most difficult circumstances. Their actions reflect the values of equality, dignity and humanity that Robert Burns championed.

“I would encourage people in South Ayrshire and across the world to nominate someone whose work deserves recognition. A nomination is a powerful way to celebrate the difference they have made and to help their story inspire others.”

Nominations opened on Monday, 24 August 2026, and will close on Friday, 25 September 2026.

The winner of the 2027 Robert Burns Humanitarian Award will be announced on Burns Night, Monday, 25 January 2027.
