Who says grey military or old aeroplanes are boring?

By Doug Maclean – Aviation Editor

We regularly update readers with some interesting activity from Ayrshire’s airport at Prestwick. We always accompany our stories with excellent pictures or videos.

I asked 2 of the best aviation photographers if they had taken any interesting pictures recently and boy they came up with some beauties.

The C17 Globemaster is a real workhorse of many modern air forces around the world. We see lots of them through Prestwick where they often stop over for fuel and crew rest. On any day of the year we can see Globemasters of the RAF, Canadian Air Force, Kuwait Air Force and very recently the Australian Air Force. By far the most common are the world’s biggest Air Force – the United States of America.

Kai Brown is developing an excellent record of still and video pictures taken at Prestwick and a little while ago he took this really stunning picture of a US Air Force C17 heavy freighter on very short final to land on Prestwick’s main runway. The picture was taken at the Sandyford Toll end of the runway and Kai zoomed in to get this superb close up shot of a big grey aeroplane looking quite beautiful.

Not to be outdone our ace photographer Eddie Wallace was out at Prestwick today to take pictures of an ex US Air Force Grumman Albatross. This lady was born in 1951 and arrived yesterday at Prestwick. She departed in some style today with the crew doing a low flypast before setting off for Marseilles in Southern France.

The 73 year old amphibian saw service in the Korean and Vietnam wars as a Search And Rescue aircraft and was credited with saving the loves of multiple sailors and airmen. In more recent times the roomy cabin of the Albatross was converted into a luxury touring and sports aeroplane. She has been based in Southampton for over a year but is no stranger to the cold seas of the Arctic Ocean. Indeed she arrived yesterday from Iceland after several days flying local flights from Reykjavik airport. It is believed the current owners will have her in Europe for some time yet and gracing many airports with her elegant and almost uniquly beautiful lines.

In addition to Eddie’s wonderful pictures at Prestwick there is a picture of the luxury cabin from previous owner TP Aero and a real quality video that they have posted in YouTube.

Stunning beauty in grey or old age. Class never fades.
