More than 150 people came together in Ayr for an emotional walk of remembrance for those who have lost their lives through alcohol, drugs and suicide.

The Annual Flower Walk, organised by South Ayrshire Alcohol and Drug Partnership (ADP) and RecoveryAyr, took place on Friday, August 28, bringing families, friends, people in recovery, support workers and members of the wider community together.

The event formed part of local activities marking International Overdose Awareness Day, which is observed annually on August 31, while also recognising World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10.

The walk began at @48, RecoveryAyr’s Community Hub in Newmarket Street, before participants made their way along the banks of the River Ayr.

Representatives from local support organisations were joined by Police Scotland and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service as the community remembered those who have died and showed support for families and friends affected by bereavement.

During the walk, participants stopped to hear personal testimonies from people directly affected by loss.

Steve, a member of Suicide Prevention Scotland’s Lived and Living Experience Panel, spoke about losing members of his family to suicide.

Rachel also shared her experience of losing a family member as a result of alcohol-related harm.

Their accounts highlighted the lasting impact that suicide and alcohol and drug-related deaths can have on families and communities, as well as the importance of compassion, understanding and access to support.

One of the most poignant moments came when participants gathered beside the River Ayr to release flowers into the water.

Each flower represented an individual being remembered, creating a moving floral tribute to those no longer with us.

Following the walk, participants returned to @48 for a Community Afternoon, where people were able to meet others, find out more about local recovery and wellbeing services and take part in activities in a supportive environment.

A spokesperson for South Ayrshire ADP said: “The Annual Flower Walk provides an opportunity for people to come together to remember loved ones, support one another, and raise awareness of the impact of alcohol, drugs and suicide on our communities.

“We are incredibly grateful to everyone who attended, including our partners and especially to those who shared their personal experiences.

“Their courage helps to challenge stigma, encourage understanding and remind people that support is available.”

Organisers said the turnout demonstrated the strength of community support across South Ayrshire and the importance of organisations working together to reduce stigma, promote recovery and help individuals and families affected by alcohol and drug-related harm, mental health challenges and suicide.

South Ayrshire ADP and RecoveryAyr thanked everyone who attended and those involved in organising and supporting the event.

Plans are already being made for the next Annual Flower Walk, which is scheduled to take place on Friday, August 27, 2027.
