Troon Chess Club has marked its 50th anniversary with a special evening celebrating the game of chess and encouraging more people across Ayrshire to get involved.

Members and visitors came together for a simultaneous exhibition featuring Jonathan Rowson, one of Scotland’s most respected chess players and writers. Rowson, a three-time British Chess Champion, took on a number of players during the event, offering a rare opportunity for local chess enthusiasts to test their skills against one of the country’s leading figures in the game.
The evening was particularly encouraging for junior players, with young people from chess clubs across Ayrshire taking part. Organisers said events like this help inspire the next generation of players, giving them the chance to learn, compete and experience chess at a high level in a welcoming community setting.
The celebration also comes during an important year for the wider chess community, as the Ayrshire Chess Association marks its 120th anniversary. The milestone reflects more than a century of promoting chess across the region and supporting players of all ages and abilities.
Those involved praised Troon Chess Club, Jonathan Rowson, organisers, volunteers, players, parents and visitors for helping make the evening a success.
The event highlighted the continued strength of chess in Ayrshire, with clubs working together to promote the game, support young players and keep the region’s proud chess tradition alive for future generations.
