Dog owners are being urged to take extra care after reports of what is believed to be palm oil washing up along the shores of Ayr and Prestwick beaches.
The reports, which have been circulating on social media, are still being verified. However, as a precaution, pet owners are being advised to remain vigilant while walking their dogs along the coastline.
Palm oil washed ashore often appears as white or yellowish waxy lumps and can easily attract the attention of curious dogs. If eaten, it can lead to a range of health problems including vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach pain and dehydration.
Owners planning to visit the beach are advised to:
Keep dogs on a lead if any unusual material is spotted.
Prevent pets from eating or licking anything washed up on the shore.
Rinse dogs’ paws after walking through any suspicious debris.
Contact a vet immediately if their dog has ingested palm oil or begins showing signs of illness.
While palm oil itself is not highly toxic, it can cause significant stomach upset and may also contain contaminants picked up while at sea, making it potentially dangerous for animals.
Anyone who spots large amounts of the waxy substance is encouraged to avoid handling it and report the sighting to the relevant authorities.
