Staff at University Hospital Crosshouse have been thanked for helping to fulfil the special wish of a palliative care patient by arranging an emotional reunion with his beloved horse.

Campbell, who is receiving care in Ward 4D, had expressed a wish to see his horse, Les, whose full name is Lezardrieux.
After learning of Campbell’s request, ward staff contacted Sammy Millar, a portering supervisor at the hospital who is also a fellow horse owner and equestrian.

Sammy helped organise the collection and transportation of Les to the hospital, allowing Campbell and his family to spend a special and intimate moment with the much-loved horse on Tuesday, August 18.

The visit was made possible through the efforts of hospital staff and others who worked together to safely bring Les to Crosshouse.
Campbell’s family have expressed their heartfelt gratitude to everyone involved and thanked the staff of Ward 4D for the care and compassion shown to him throughout his time at the hospital.
They gave particular thanks to Sammy Millar, Portering Supervisor; Sandi McGuire, Staff Nurse in Ward 4D; Philip Quelch of Ballycoach Smithy in Dalrymple; and all the other members of staff involved in Campbell’s care.
The family said the visit created a deeply meaningful moment for Campbell and those closest to him, while demonstrating the difference that kindness and compassion can make during an exceptionally difficult time.
