A capsule wardrobe is a small collection of versatile clothes that mix and match easily. It can save money, cut down on decision-making in the morning and reduce waste.

For a Scottish winter, the key is building around layers that cope with changeable weather.

Start with a good coat

A waterproof, windproof coat in a neutral colour will be worn more than anything else you own. It is worth spending a little more here and less elsewhere.

Choose a simple colour palette

Picking two or three base colours, such as navy, grey and camel, and adding one accent shade means almost everything will go together.

Invest in knitwear and boots

Two or three warm jumpers, a pair of well-fitting jeans or trousers and sturdy, comfortable boots will cover most days, from the school run to a walk along the seafront.

Before buying anything new, check what you already own. Charity shops and resale apps are also a great source of quality basics.
