For Rhian, however, this success is about more than individual achievement. It is the latest chapter in a remarkable family story built on dedication, hard work and a shared passion for athletics.
The HNC Uniformed and Emergency Services student has been chosen for the 2026–27 Winning Students 100 programme, which supports talented athletes across Scotland to balance the demands of education with high-performance sport. A talented thrower with Kilmarnock Harriers, Rhian comes from a family deeply rooted in athletics. His parents, Kevin and Gillian, coach at the club, while older brothers Ally and Logan are also accomplished competitors. Together, they have created an environment that nurtures ambition, resilience and success, with plenty of friendly rivalry along the way.
That support network has helped Rhian reach impressive heights. This year, he proudly represented Great Britain and Northern Ireland at the European Under-18 Championships and claimed five Scottish age-group championship medals, establishing himself as one of the country's most promising young athletes.
The family's connection to Ayrshire College is equally strong. Kevin, Ally and Logan all studied Sport and Fitness at the College before progressing to university, and Rhian is now forging his own path through a different discipline while continuing the family's tradition of achievement.
Backed by SportScotland and the Scottish Funding Council, the Winning Students 100 programme provides financial assistance and tailored support to help student athletes thrive in both their academic and sporting careers.
Rhian said:
"Being selected for Winning Students 100 is incredibly exciting and gives me the opportunity to continue progressing as an athlete while working towards my qualification. It can be challenging balancing study, training and competition, so having this support means a lot.
"Athletics has always been a huge part of our family life. Having parents who coach and brothers who compete means there's always someone to encourage me, challenge me and help me improve. We support each other every step of the way, but there's definitely a healthy competitive edge that keeps us striving for more.
"My dad and brothers all studied at Ayrshire College, so it's special to be continuing that connection while following my own interests and ambitions."
Kevin said:
"Athletics has shaped our family for many years and has given us so many shared experiences. Gillian and I have had the privilege of seeing each of our boys develop their own talents, set their own goals and work hard to achieve them.
"There is always a bit of sibling rivalry, especially when they're competing, but at the heart of it is a genuine desire to see each other succeed. We are incredibly proud of what Rhian has achieved so far, and this scholarship is well-deserved recognition of his commitment and potential.
"As someone who studied at Ayrshire College myself, and having seen Ally and Logan start their journeys there too, it's wonderful to see Rhian making the most of the opportunities available to him and building his own future."
Jennifer Anderson, Assistant Principal for Skills and Innovation at Ayrshire College, said:
"We are absolutely delighted to see Rhian selected for the Winning Students 100 programme. This prestigious scholarship recognises not only his sporting talent, but also the commitment, determination and resilience he demonstrates every day in balancing his studies with high-level competition.
"The Mitchell family has a proud history with the College, and it is inspiring to see Rhian continuing that legacy while forging his own path. Rhian is an outstanding ambassador for Ayrshire College. His achievements demonstrate what can be accomplished when hard work, talent and determination are matched by strong educational support. We look forward to following his continued success and wish him every success as part of the Winning Students 100 programme."
