Specsavers in Irvine has launched a new clinical service aimed at helping people experiencing uncomfortable dry eye symptoms.
The store is now offering ZEST, or Zocular Eyelid System Technology, a quick and non-invasive procedure carried out in-store by a specially trained clinician.
The treatment usually takes between 10 and 20 minutes and uses a natural okra-based gel and specialised swab to deep-clean the eyelids and lashes.
The process helps remove biofilm, debris and mites which can block the oil glands around the eyelids and contribute to dry eye symptoms.
Common symptoms of dry eye include soreness, irritation, itching, redness, watery eyes and blurred vision.
The condition is becoming increasingly common and can be linked to factors including prolonged screen use, air conditioning, central heating and ageing.
Gordon Simpson, ophthalmic director at Specsavers Irvine, said many people mistakenly believe dry eye is something they simply have to tolerate.
He said: “Untreated dry eye can significantly impact quality of life, comfort and even vision. Symptoms can sometimes worsen over time if the underlying cause is not addressed properly.
“Seeing an optometrist or contact lens optician is important because they can assess the health of the eye and eyelids, identify the root cause of the dry eye problem and recommend the most appropriate procedure plan.
“In some cases, symptoms of dry eye can also overlap with other eye conditions, so a professional assessment helps ensure patients receive the correct care and advice.”
Specsavers said some customers experience an immediate improvement in comfort and clarity following the treatment.

Patients will receive a full assessment before undergoing the treatment to determine whether the procedure is suitable for them.
Mr Simpson said that while many patients notice a significant improvement after one session, dry eye is often a long-term condition which may require continued management.
